Because of a widespread and inevitable changes in the landscape of education, Philippines is gradually embracing a new and innovative way of delivering quality education to people. In this article, I would like to share the pioneer in distance education in the Philippines and how it is getting more popular in the country.
What is Open University?
Open University provides education to those wishing to pursue higher education in a part-time and full time basis. It is a distance learning that provides continuation of education to those who cannot afford to be physically present in a classroom setup due to personal and professional reason.
UP Open University
Founded February 23, 1995, it is the first institution of its kind. UPOU is the fifth constituent of the UP system that is situated in Los Banos, Laguna. It has several learning and testing centers all throughout the country that serve as the physical representation of the university. UP Open University as some people say is also the cyber university of the Philippines. Learning takes place online. Classroom recitation has been replaced by online forum discussion. Students are given modules to guide them in their everyday learning at their own paced. There’s a student online portal where everyone can check regularly for updates, important announcement and online files. This is very ideal to those who can’t find enough time to enter school because of work career or to those who live in remote places.

I, myself the author of this article also submitted my formal intent to be admitted under the program Master of Arts in Nursing. I was informed to fill up the application form, prepare an original and photocopy of school Transcript of Records, Board rating, any valid ID for identification purposes, (2) recommendation letter from my immediate employer/supervisor or previous dean/professor who can testify and rate my readiness in the graduate school and lastly, an essay telling the reason why I chose UP and my plans after graduating in their institution. Their friendly staff and coordinators will help you fulfill your application before the deadline ends.
I chose Diliman as my learning center since this is more accessible to me. One thing that appeals me is that you can still continue studying in UPOU even though you are located overseas (abroad). This is highly recommended to nurses who are planning to take graduate school who will leave the country soon. You can however check the list of learning/testing centers of UPOU on this link.
As of this moment, I am just waiting for the posting of successful applicants on their website. An applicant will also receive an email and a mail forwarded to address of choice informing about acceptance and what to do after being admitted on the university.
I am crossing my fingers now 🙂
